KNOWLEDGE AND EXECUTIVE NEEDS FOR FISH FARMERS TO LIMIT THE SPREAD OF FISH DISEASES

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the degree of the cognitive needs for fish farmers regard to the recommendations on reduction of fish diseases as well as to identify the degree of the executive needs for fish farmers regard to the recommendations on the reduction of fish diseases and to identify the relationship between the average degree of the cognitive and the executive needs for fish farmers regard the recommendations of fish diseases and the independent variables educational status, number of experience years in the field of aquaculture, a full-time profession, possession of the farm, the area of ​​the farm, the number of training courses attended by the respondents for fish ponds, the number of sources of information the respondents relied upon to obtain their own knowledge.

This study was conducted on a sample of fish farmers who their farms suffered from disease in recent years, sample of research include 15 farmers from Kafr El-Sheikh governorate in Riyadh, 17 farmers from El-Behira governorate in Edko lake, and 19 farmers from Sharkia in El-Husseiniyam, 4 farmers from Ismailia governorate in El-tell El-kebeer, total of sample 55 farm from 90 farms, data was collected during the months of July, August and September of 2014, the study adopted to collect data on the personal interview with the respondents, using a questionnaire form and to analyze these data represented percentages, the arithmetic average, and also the simple correlation coefficient.

The main results show that 47.27% of the total number of the respondents the degree of their cognitive needs medium, the results indicate that 80% of the total number of the respondents the degree of the executive needs medium and high, the results showed also no relationship significant at the level (0.01) between the average degree of the knowledge needs for Fish farmers regarding to the recommendations of the reduction of fish diseases and independent variables studied age, educational status, the area of fish farm, the number of times of the farm disease, results show that the expected role by the extension to reduce the spread of diseases, according to their responses.

The research recommended to activate the extension role in the future by providing specialized training courses in the field of fish diseases as well as providing extension bulletins in that field with establishment of extension fields to define the farmers on the precautions proper to limit the spread of fish diseases.
